Seawater Desalination RO System (SWRO System)

As a leading manufacturer of marine water treatment equipment, Yiwu Weihao Machinery Equipment Company specializes in designing and manufacturing high-efficiency Seawater Desalination RO Systems (SWRO Systems), the global mainstream seawater desalination technology. Our SWRO systems adopt advanced reverse osmosis membrane separation technology, integrating pretreatment, high-pressure filtration, membrane separation, energy recovery and post-treatment into one, which can efficiently convert high-salinity seawater (TDS 30000-45000 ppm) into clean freshwater, with low energy consumption, high desalination rate and stable operation, widely used in coastal areas, islands, offshore platforms, industrial zones and remote coastal communities.

Compared with traditional thermal desalination methods (MSF, MED), our RO desalination systems have obvious advantages in energy saving and investment cost, with energy consumption as low as 2.7-3.8 kWh/m³, only 1/3 of multi-stage flash distillation, and have become the preferred solution for global seawater desalination projects.

Working Principle

The core of the Seawater Desalination RO System is the selective permeability of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The working process follows a scientific and efficient workflow, ensuring high-purity freshwater output and stable system operation: 1. Seawater Intake & Pretreatment: Seawater is first taken from the sea and treated by multi-stage filtration (sand filter, carbon filter, ultrafiltration) to remove suspended solids, algae, colloids, residual chlorine and oil, reducing SDI to ≤3, which protects the RO membrane from physical damage and pollution. 2. High-Pressure Pressurization: The pretreated seawater is pressurized to 55-75 bar (higher than the natural osmotic pressure of seawater, about 2.7 MPa) by a high-pressure pump, providing power for reverse osmosis separation. 3. Membrane Separation (Core Step): Under high pressure, water molecules pass through the RO membrane (pore size about 0.0001 micrometers) to the permeate side to form freshwater, while 99.7%+ of dissolved salts (sodium, calcium, chloride ions), heavy metals, bacteria and organic pollutants are intercepted on the membrane surface. 4. Energy Recovery: The high-pressure concentrated brine after membrane separation is recycled through an energy recovery device (ERD), reducing energy consumption by 30-40% and lowering operating costs. 5. Post-Treatment (Optional): The produced freshwater can be subjected to UV sterilization, mineralization or pH adjustment according to needs, meeting the standards of drinking water, industrial water or agricultural irrigation. 6. Concentrated Brine Discharge: The concentrated brine after treatment is discharged in accordance with environmental standards, or further processed for salt production to realize resource utilization.

Core Features

  • High Desalination Rate: Equipped with high-performance seawater RO membranes, the salt rejection rate reaches 99.7%+ , effectively removing dissolved salts, heavy metals, bacteria and organic impurities, and the produced freshwater TDS is less than 500 ppm, meeting WHO drinking water standards and industrial water requirements.

  • Energy-Saving & Efficient: Integrated with advanced energy recovery device (ERD), the ton water energy consumption is as low as 2.7-3.8 kWh/m³, which is more energy-saving than traditional thermal desalination technology; the system recovery rate is 40-60%, maximizing freshwater production.

  • Stable & Anti-Fouling: Scientific pretreatment system and anti-scaling agent addition effectively prevent membrane fouling and scaling; RO membranes adopt advanced nanocomposite technology, with strong anti-pollution ability and long service life (3-5 years).

  • Dual Configuration Options: Available in fixed-type (for large-scale coastal plants) and containerized-type (compact, easy to transport and deploy), suitable for temporary water supply, disaster relief, offshore platforms and remote areas.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Structure: All wetted parts are made of 316L stainless steel or duplex stainless steel, which can resist the corrosion of high-salt seawater and extend the service life of the equipment.

  • Fully Automatic Control: Equipped with PLC + touch screen control system, with high and low voltage protection, fault alarm and real-time water quality monitoring (inline conductivity meter), realizing unmanned operation and easy troubleshooting.

  • Customizable Design: According to customer’s daily water demand (from 2 m³/d to 15000 m³/d), seawater TDS value, and application scenarios (drinking water, industrial water, offshore use), customize the system configuration and membrane quantity; support multi-membrane stack parallel connection to expand capacity.

Application Fields

Our Seawater Desalination RO Systems are widely used in various scenarios requiring freshwater supply, covering multiple industries and regions, and have been successfully applied in projects in Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and other countries, including but not limited to:

  • Coastal Municipal Water Supply: Provide clean drinking water for coastal cities and towns, solving the problem of freshwater scarcity in coastal areas.

  • Island & Remote Coastal Communities: Supply freshwater for residents, schools and hospitals on islands and remote coastal areas, improving living conditions.

  • Offshore & Marine Projects: Provide freshwater for offshore oil platforms, cruise ships, yachts and marine vessels, meeting the daily water needs of crew members.

  • Industrial Water Supply: Provide high-purity freshwater for coastal industrial zones (steel, power, chemical industry), meeting the needs of production and cooling water.

  • Temporary & Emergency Water Supply: Containerized RO systems are suitable for disaster relief, temporary construction sites and military operations, realizing rapid deployment and water supply.

  • Agricultural Irrigation: Provide desalinated freshwater for coastal agricultural areas with scarce freshwater resources, promoting agricultural development.
